British authorities have seized a tanker suspected of being part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet while it was transiting the English Channel.
The vessel was intercepted by UK forces amid growing efforts by Western countries to enforce sanctions imposed on Russia following its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Officials said the tanker is believed to have been involved in transporting Russian oil or petroleum products in a manner designed to evade international sanctions. The term “shadow fleet” is commonly used to describe ships that operate through complex ownership structures, flag changes, or other methods to bypass restrictions.
British authorities stated that the vessel has been taken into custody pending further investigation into its ownership, cargo, and compliance with international maritime regulations and sanctions measures.
The UK government said the operation demonstrates its commitment to enforcing sanctions and preventing efforts to undermine international restrictions imposed on Russia.
Moscow has repeatedly criticized Western sanctions, arguing that they are illegal and harmful to global trade and energy markets.
Maritime security experts say shadow fleet operations have become increasingly important for Russia’s oil exports as sanctions have limited access to traditional shipping and insurance services.
The seizure is expected to add to tensions between Russia and Western countries, while highlighting the ongoing efforts to monitor and restrict sanctioned trade routes.
