The Punch newspaper reported that the attackers struck on Monday morning while students were writing their NECO examinations, firing sporadically and abducting some students and female traders who were within the school premises.

The Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, confirmed the rescue of the seven students, stating that security forces are still making efforts to rescue the remaining abductees.

He said the exact number of abducted students has yet to be ascertained, and that the state government has deployed a team to the area to assess the situation and reassure the town's residents.

The Borno State Police Command spokesperson, Nahum Daso, said security forces engaged the attackers in a gun battle, which prevented them from kidnapping more people.

The attack comes at a time when assaults on schools are increasingly on the rise in the North-East region.
