Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) have pledged to strengthen air defence support for Ukraine and impose tougher sanctions on Russia as the war continues.
During their summit discussions, G7 leaders focused on ways to help Ukraine defend itself against missile strikes and drone attacks. The planned support is expected to include additional air defence systems, military equipment, and related assistance.
The leaders also discussed expanding economic sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Russia. These measures are intended to limit Russia’s ability to finance and sustain its military operations.
G7 officials said their objective is to reinforce Ukraine’s security, protect civilians and critical infrastructure, and demonstrate continued international support for the country.
Since the start of the conflict, G7 nations have provided Ukraine with significant military, financial, and humanitarian assistance while coordinating multiple rounds of sanctions against Russia.
Supporters of the measures argue that stronger sanctions and enhanced air defences are necessary to help Ukraine resist ongoing attacks and improve its security position.
Analysts say the latest commitments reflect the G7’s continued backing of Ukraine, although they note that the effectiveness of additional sanctions and military aid will depend on how the conflict evolves in the coming months.
Further details on the new assistance and sanctions packages are expected to be announced following the conclusion of the summit.
