The renegotiation that commenced in 2017 and witnessed 4 different renegotiation teams has come to an end on the 23rd of December 2025. The 2009 agreement was due for renegotiation by 2012. The struggle for the renegotiation led to the formation of the Babalakin Renegotiation Committee by the Buhari government. The same government inaugurated the Munzamil Renegotiation Committee.
This was followed by the
inauguration of another Renegotiation Committee that was chaired by
Nimi-Briggs. The renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement was nearly completed in
2022 by the Nimi Briggs Committee, and a draft report was submitted to the FG
for consideration and signing, before Ngige started a media blackmail against
the committee. He succeeded, and the report was trashed by the same government
that inaugurated and funded them, just like the reports of the previous
committees.
Yayale Ahmed's Renegotiation
Committee was inaugurated by the Tinubu government in 2024. After dragging it
for over a year, an agreement based on collective bargaining was finally
signed. Yayale Ahmed signed on behalf of the Federal Government, while Chris
Piwuna signed on behalf of ASUU.
The agreement takes effect from
1st January 2026 and it will be reviewed after three years. It implies that it
is due for renegotiation by December 2028.
I think it is in order to commend
the commitment of Alhaji Yayale Ahmed and his Team to the renegotiation. This
government should also be commended for its commitment to the renegotiation
that has dragged on for eight (8) years. They could have chosen the path of the
immediate past government and Ngigelize the process. Meanwhile, it is a good
thing that Ngige is alive to witness the signing of the new agreement.
Dear comrades, we may not have
gotten what we anticipated but we got a relatively fair deal from collective
bargaining. It is due for review in 3 years. I hope we won't need to go on
another endless strike before the renegotiation.
Dear President Tinubu, the
effective date for the agreement is the 1st January 2026. I hope there won't be
a need for a strike for its implementation.
