A former US elementary school teacher who was shot by her six-year-old student has been awarded $10 million in compensation.
The incident occurred in January 2023 at Richneck Elementary School in Virginia, when the young boy brought a gun to class and shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner, in the hand and chest.
Zwerner survived the attack but suffered severe injuries and emotional trauma. She later filed a lawsuit against the school district, claiming that school officials ignored multiple warnings about the child’s behavior and the possibility he was carrying a gun that day.
After a lengthy legal process, a Virginia court ruled in her favor, awarding her $10 million in damages for negligence and emotional distress.
The case has reignited national debate in the US about school safety, gun control, and accountability in cases involving minors and firearms.
