Tension flared on Monday at the headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Wadata Plaza, Abuja, after a confrontation broke out between supporters of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and those backing the newly elected PDP National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki.
The incident occurred as members from both factions reportedly disagreed over the party’s scheduled activities, leading to heated exchanges and disorder within the premises.
The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, one of the key figures supporting Turaki, was present when the situation escalated. The chaos intensified after police officers deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd and restore order around the party office.
Eyewitnesses said the tear gas spread across the area, causing panic and forcing many people to flee for safety. While no fatalities have been reported, some individuals are said to have sustained minor injuries due to the rush and confusion.
Security authorities have not yet issued a detailed explanation for the use of tear gas, but inside sources suggest the clash stemmed from disagreements over leadership control and the organization of the party’s meeting.
The PDP is expected to release an official statement soon to clarify its position and address the internal conflict at a time when the party is attempting to stabilize its structure under new leadership.
