Final-year students from the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy at Baze University, Abuja, undertook an educational field trip to the United Nations (UN) Office in Nigeria, where they gained insights into global diplomacy, peacebuilding, and programs for youth.
The delegation was led by Professor Christian Tsaro Dii, accompanied by Dr. Khalifa Mohammed, the university's student trip liaison officer, and Musa Yelwa, a student affairs officer.
The students arrived at the UN headquarters at about 10:00 AM for the day-long scheduled activity, designed to give them practical exposure to what they learned in the classroom.
The students were drawn from the IRD 409 – United Nations and World Affairs and IRD 410 – International Economic Relations courses.
Upon arrival at the complex, the students were received by UN officials and escorted inside, where a pre-arranged program commenced. It began with the screening of historical films on the First and Second World Wars, including a biography of Adolf Hitler. These historical materials provided the students with context for understanding discussions on global peace and security.
One of the major highlights of the visit was a comprehensive briefing on the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Agenda—a UN framework that assigns a crucial role to youth in conflict prevention and nation-building. Peacebuilding officials also explained UN operations within Nigeria, including pilot programs in Niger, Nasarawa, and Kaduna states.
Throughout the visit, the students had the opportunity to interact with UN officials, asking questions about the global governance structure, peace processes, and the responsibility placed on young people to ensure security within their communities.
