South Korea’s military has confirmed the arrest of a North Korean soldier who crossed the heavily fortified border dividing the two countries on Monday. Reports indicate that the soldier deliberately entered South Korean territory and was quickly apprehended by security forces without any exchange of fire.

An official from South Korea’s Defense Ministry said investigations are ongoing to determine why the soldier crossed the border and whether he was seeking asylum. North Korean authorities have not yet commented on the incident, while South Korea has increased surveillance along the border to prevent similar cases in the future.
