Former Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (retired), has said that terrorism and insurgency cannot be brought to an end by the use of military force alone.
Buratai made this known at the launch of the book "Military Transformational Leadership in Action: The Buratai Era," written by M.S. Abubakar, in Abuja.
He said that success in the fight against terrorism requires the cooperation of government agencies, the community, traditional rulers, religious leaders, as well as international partners.
Buratai, who served as Chief of Army Staff from 2015 to 2021, said that when he took over the leadership of the army, Boko Haram was holding some territories, which forced people to leave their homes and reduced their confidence in security.
He said his administration implemented reforms and established new units to strengthen the military's operations, while also improving the welfare and expertise of personnel.
The author of the book, Abubakar, said he began gathering information about Buratai's era in 2016, spending nearly 10 years researching the reforms and counter-insurgency operations of that period.
The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, commended Buratai's leadership style, saying the former army chief helped to identify and develop officers who later became senior commanders of the army.
