Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed a proposal from the European Union to establish a closer form of cooperation with Canada through associated membership.
The proposal would aim to strengthen ties between Canada and the EU in areas such as trade, security, defence, research and other strategic interests. It comes as both sides seek to deepen their relationship amid growing global economic and geopolitical challenges.
Carney said Canada is open to exploring closer cooperation with European partners. The proposal does not mean Canada would become a full member of the EU, but could create a new framework for closer engagement between the two sides.
EU officials have described Canada as an important strategic partner, particularly on issues involving international security, economic resilience and support for multilateral institutions.
Discussions are expected to continue as Canada and EU member states consider the details and scope of any possible associated-membership arrangement.
