Philippine authorities have launched an investigation into several Senate security guards following a shooting incident at the country’s Senate building last week, an event that caused panic and political tension across the nation.

According to reports, the shooting occurred while Senator Ronald dela Rosa, who is reportedly wanted for questioning by the International Criminal Court (ICC), sought refuge inside the Senate building to avoid a possible arrest.

Philippine Interior Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla stated that the Senate’s chief security officer, Mao Aplasca, allegedly fired the first shot. Officials said another government officer later responded with warning shots during the confusion.

Authorities emphasized that there was no direct armed attack on the Senate itself and that government agents did not storm the building. However, investigators are examining whether the security personnel used their firearms improperly or without sufficient justification.

The investigation is also focusing on CCTV footage and the circumstances surrounding Senator dela Rosa’s departure from the Senate amid the chaos.

The incident has intensified political tensions in the Philippines, especially regarding the ICC’s investigation into former President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, which human rights groups allege involved thousands of extrajudicial killings.
