More than 40 people have been confirmed dead in Sri Lanka after days of heavy rainfall caused severe flooding and landslides across several parts of the country.
The Sri Lankan Disaster Management Centre said thousands of homes have been destroyed or submerged, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee to higher ground. Rescue teams, including the military, are working around the clock to reach trapped families and deliver emergency supplies.
Authorities said the central and southern regions were the hardest hit, with roads washed away, bridges damaged, and electricity cut off in many communities. Schools have also been closed, and transportation has been heavily disrupted.
Officials warned that the death toll could rise as rescue workers continue to search for missing people, especially in areas where landslides buried homes.
Sri Lanka’s government has appealed for international support, requesting emergency relief items such as boats, tents, clean water, medicine, and food.
Meteorologists say more rain is expected in the coming days, raising fears of further destruction.
