A Federal High Court in Nigeria has ordered the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to allow former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, to contest for the position of national chairman of the party.
According to media reports, Justice Peter Odo Lifu ruled that the PDP acted wrongly by preventing Lamido from purchasing the nomination form.
The court also directed the party to suspend its planned convention scheduled for Saturday, citing the party’s failure to publish the convention timetable within the required timeframe as stipulated by the Electoral Act.
This ruling marks the third court order restraining the PDP from holding the convention, which is expected to produce new national leaders.
However, the party’s leadership under Umar Ilya Damagun insists the convention will go ahead, arguing that it has another court order permitting it to continue with the process.
