The Federal Government of Nigeria has granted clemency to Maryam Sanda and 85 other inmates following a review of names submitted for possible pardon across the country’s correctional facilities.

In a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Justice, the government explained that the decision came after a careful examination of legal documents, the nature of the offences committed, and the conduct of the inmates during their time in custody - in line with the policy of humane and restorative justice.

According to the statement: “The committee reviewed several cases in line with constitutional provisions for prerogative of mercy. Among those considered was Maryam Sanda, who was convicted for the death of her husband, Bilyamin Bello. After thorough consideration, she was granted clemency based on legal and humanitarian grounds.”

The Ministry added that other beneficiaries of the clemency include inmates convicted of minor offences, pregnant women, and those suffering from terminal illnesses.

The government emphasized that the purpose of the move is to promote compassionate justice and give reformed inmates a second chance to contribute positively to society. “This act of mercy does not mean the government takes criminal offences lightly. Rather, it reflects our belief that justice must also allow room for forgiveness, rehabilitation, and hope,” the Ministry stated.

Maryam Sanda was sentenced to death by hanging in 2020 for killing her husband, but the federal government has now confirmed that she is among those who received special clemency after the recent review.
