Is Donald Trump Trying to Dial Back Tensions With Brazil?

After imposing heavy tariffs and pushing strong rhetoric, recent diplomatic moves suggest a possible thaw.

Recent developments between the United States and Brazil suggest that Donald Trump may be seeking to ease tensions. The shift comes after months of heated rhetoric, significant tariffs (including a 50% duty on Brazilian imports), and strong criticism over Brazil’s handling of the trial of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Earlier this week, Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a “friendly” video call during which Trump expressed optimism that the two countries would “do very well together.” Lula requested that Trump remove current tariffs on Brazilian goods and called for cooperation on trade and climate policy.

While Brazil has strongly defended its democracy and protested what it views as U.S. interference, these recent exchanges indicate a willingness on both sides to resume diplomacy. Diplomats say it’s too early to call the tension fully resolved, but the overtures are clear.
