Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike scored the decisive goal that restored Liverpool’s lead against Southampton after the match had been level at 1–1. Ekitike struck in the 85th minute, but the celebration that followed brought him trouble - he removed his shirt on the pitch and was immediately shown a red card.
It remains unclear whether
Ekitike did this knowingly or simply out of excitement, but the act put
Liverpool in a difficult situation. The suspension from the red card will also
carry over into their upcoming Premier League fixture.
In the end, Liverpool triumphed
2–1. Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the 43rd minute—his first goal since
leaving former club Newcastle just before the close of the English transfer
window. Ekitike then sealed the win with his 85th-minute strike before being
dismissed a minute later.
